These books present a look at Iraq as it once was but do not provide enough reminders that things are changing rapidly. As readers look at people going about their daily lives and work, there should be the nagging thought, is this still true? While there is some necessary repetition among the titles, each one provides an overview of its subject and a good sense of the rich history of this country and the many peoples who have settled there and added to its culture. The photography is crisp and clear and the language, with an additional glossary for difficult terms, is direct. In contrast, the discussions of the various groups who settled the area and the many conflicts for control are not clear because of the lack of maps and time lines. As an avid perennial gardener, I can't recommend this book highly enough. Virtually all 350 pages feature large scale, interesting photos, with only brief descriptions of each person or place at the end of the book, all sorted by region.
Tod's has been running a series of ads using photographs related to this book. A big part of what has allowed the American government to borrow as much as it has (and to keep on borrowing now) is the fact that the American dollar is the world's reserve currency, which means it is always in demand, and hence people and organizations have been willing to act as creditors in order to get it. He was surprised by the friendliness and lack of rancor with which they were greeted. No shortage of twist in this one, just when you think you have figured out who is up to no good, don't bother, keep reading and let the story guide you.
