Editorial : From Library Journal There is much more to Marshall than the Montana wilderness bearing his name. Glover brings to life an immensely energetic fighter for wilderness and humanitarian causes in the 1930s. An indefatigible hiker, he often walked over 30 miles a day, even as a Forest Service chief. He was a romantic, an optimist, a scientist, a writer, a talker, a keeper of lists, a humorist"a kind of da Vinci in high-topped sneakers." A founder of the Wilderness Society, he stirred professional foresters and the public with his enthusiastic, articulate, pragmatic speeches and writings. He laid the groundwork for the landmark 1964 Wilderness Act and, like John Muir, greatly influenced modern thinking about outdoor values. Highly recommended for history, conservation, and recreation collections at all levels. Roland Person, Southern Illinois Univ. Lib., CarbondaleCopyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Each year thousands of travelers visit the Bob-- Montana's vast Bob Marshall Wilderness. Few, however, know much about the gentle, funny, enormously energetic, and extraordinarily effective man for whom the wilderness is named. Marshall was born into a prominent, wealthy New York family, yet early on he showed himself to be more at home in the wild than in the city. Educated at Syracuse, Harvard, and Johns Hopkins, Marshall used his technical knowledge of forestry, enormous personal charm, and boundless energy to persuade the nation to set aside at least a fraction of its remaining wilderness. Marshall is also famous for his early Alaska explorations (1929-1939), described in his bestselling books Arctic Village and Alaska Wilderness. When Marshall died in 1939, at age 38, presumably of heart failure, the conservation movement lost one of its most persuasive, influential, and endearing spokesmen.
