Editorial : About the AuthorPeter Lockton, CBE, was born in Bristol, UK in 1934. An electrical engineer, he had 43 years' continuous service with one of the UK's largest power systems companies. His job took him to many parts of the world. The thirteen years before his retirement were spent in India. Since retirement, he and his wife, Lucy, divide their time between the UK and India. Peter has been keenly interested in Royal Commemorative mugs and beakers for over forty years and has a large collection, many of which are featured in this book. Lucy, ever since waving her flag as a schoolgirl when greeting Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Philip outside Kheria Airport, Agra, India in 1961, has been intensely interested in Britain's Royalty and ensures pride of place in their home for the collection of Royal Commemoratives.

Royal commemorative mugs and beakers must be the most popular of all the small antiques and collectables ever to take pride of place in our homes. As long ago as 1660 a mug was made to commemorate the coronation of King Charles II, but it was to be a further century before the next Royal commemoratives were produced to celebrate George II's coronation in 1761. These were individually made, and it was not until Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, following technical advance in the production of creamware and transfer printing, that the markets were flooded with Royal commemoratives. At this time too, town councils, borough corporations and various local authorities commissioned millions, many of which were presented to schoolchildren.
