Editorial : About the Author Kevin Wilson is the author of the collection, Tunneling to the Center of the Earth (Ecco/HarperPerennial, 2009), which received an Alex Award from the American Library Association and the Shirley Jackson Award. His fiction has appeared in four volumes of the New Stories from the South: The Year's Best anthology, and he has received fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, and the KHN Center for the Arts. He lives in Sewanee, Tennessee, where he teaches fiction at the University of the South and lives with his wife, the poet Leigh Anne Couch, and his son, Griff.
I would give this story 4 stars.
The second story was very unrealistic. Just understand that since this is not a reading book you will most likely need to go back and forth between sections multiple times. "Showing a little enthusiasm for writing is good." What would be worse, of course, would be a dense, jargon-laden style, which the book does not have. The Shadows feed on misery, pain, depression, and despair, and they have the ability to effect a person's physiology and tinker with a person's mind and to rewrite person's memories. I do not know the exact number but somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 percent (give or take 10) of the enzymes in the Krebs cycle are "sulf-hydryl" enzymes. I liked this book, but I didn't realize it carries all the way until your child gets married. If you want to read about REAL LIFE just trying to make ends meet, this is a must read.
